Workforce Shift in the Age of AI: Risks, Rewards, Reality
AI is reshaping the world of work. Across Africa and within Kenya, both risk and opportunity are rising as technologies scale faster than skills. Recent data shows that 64% of African workers used AI at work in the past year, outpacing the global average of 54% a sign that adoption is accelerating even where formal training is still emerging.

New research finds companies in Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa overwhelmingly view AI skills as critical: 99% say AI skills are essential for business success, with 61% rating them extremely important.
At the same time, a national skills analysis urges collaborative action to bridge widening gaps across key sectors including ICT, manufacturing, agribusiness, and healthcare. (JEPA Africa)
2. Upskilling in Action
Kenya’s labour market is responding with training initiatives: over 600 youth on the Coast have completed AI and soft skills training aimed at boosting employment pathways.
Cloud skills are in demand too Kenya recently hosted its first AWS re/Start career fair, connecting certified cloud practitioners to employers.
3. Skills Demand Driving Hiring Priorities
Locally, three out of four employers now rank ICT and digital skills above all other technical competencies in recruitment, signalling how quickly employer expectations are shifting. (Business Daily Africa)
